2.Pacaya Volcano Trek

★★★★★★★★★★4.4 · 798 reviews · 6 hours · from $23

Leave Antigua by shared minivan for Pacaya’s slopes, then hike with an English or Spanish-speaking guide through pine forest and ash to steaming volcanic ground. You may see lava if activity allows, and you can roast marshmallows over the heat. The hike is moderate to strenuous, with horses available locally for an extra fee.

“Pacaya exceeded my expectations. the ascent was a continuous steep climb with barely any flat surface. All but one person in the group had to ride a horse going up. But the view from the top was definitely amazing. The guide also had some marshmallow he roasted using steam seeping from the ground. Only complaint was that I was picked up 1 hr later than what was advised. And the driver seemed to try to make up for time by driving extremely fast.”

It was my first time visiting Pacaya, what an unforgettable experience. I would recommend it. My advice would be make sure to wear a nice pair of hiking boots.”

“Our tour guide was so nice! The drive there was okay, the drive back I did get a bit carsick. I have to have the windows open both times. The hike was extremely challenging, but as we were descending my tour guide held my hand and ran down with me so I didn’t fall! If you like a challenge and want to see the volcanic rock, I’d recommend! I think the driver was pretty good as well it might just be a me/carsick issue.”

“David was a great host! When we arrived at Pacaya, he met up with Cubanu. Between the two of them, we had an amazing experience. At the highest point of the hike, David prepared a delicious lunch with fresh guacamole and vegetables. As a reward for completing the hardest part of the climb, it was delicious. Simple food done without much fanfare in an amazing location. My kids are still talking about this one days later as one of their favorite activities of our trip to Antigua.”

“The reason for 4 stars and not 5 is only due to lack of description of this tour on Viator website and lack of explanation of lunch activity from our guide. The volcano hike was great, however after the hike we thought we were going to have lunch onsite at the mountain. It had been 6 or 7 hrs since we had eaten breakfast and our group was really excited to eat an outdoor lunch. But instead we bussed about 30 mins to another town to a hotel with thermal pools. We were told to go in the pools and eat in the restaurant later. We told him we needed…”

Start at 7:30 a.m. from Antigua, hike Pacaya with a local guide such as Claudio, Lydia, Juan Carlos, or Rodolfo, then enjoy lunch and the thermal pools at Kawilal Hot Springs. The hike reaches lava fields and viewpoints rather than always reaching the crater. Park entry costs $15 extra.

“The tour was great - pickup was at their office and the hike was a medium level hike! the morning is where you see the volcano the best before the clouds set in so I recommend! I agree that the tour just drops you off the hot springs hotel but they left is with someone who told us what our lunch options were. Communication could be better but overall, this was a GREAT day!”

The hike up is pretty hard but the hike down is easy and it is 100% worth it once you get to the top, and he even brought us marshmallows to roast in the volcano.”

“Get ready to hike. I do not think this is a beginner’s friendly hike, more moderate- advanced. They have gourdes that you can ride up the mountain but they are pretty overpriced so be sure to carry extra cash if you cannot complete the hike. (Mind you I actually work out and it was difficult). Great experience overall, but beware of physicality required.”
